RV's First MOSAIC-Compliant Aircraft Delivery with Sling Aircraft Not Far Behind

The first factory-produced aircraft delivered under the United States Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) new Modernisation of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) regulations signifies a major advancement for recreational aviation. The handover of a Van's Aircraft RV-12 at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026 illustrates the transition of this long-anticipated regulatory change from policy to practical implementation.

The aircraft was officially delivered during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, a prominent aviation event, to EAA Lifetime Member Tom Snow from Signal Mountain, Tennessee. It will be leased to Crystal Air Flight School in Chattanooga, joining a modern training fleet.

This RV-12 is particularly significant as it is the first model built at Van's Aircraft's Oregon facility to comply fully with the new MOSAIC regulations. Its certification shows that manufacturers are already adopting the FAA's revised framework, allowing for enhanced capabilities while staying within the Light Sport category.

While Van's Aircraft has the distinction of delivering the first factory-built aircraft certified under the new MOSAIC regulations, South Africa's Sling Aircraft is also an early beneficiary of the new certification framework.

At EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026, Sling introduced the Sling 2M, the company's first aircraft specifically designed and certified to meet the new MOSAIC standards. This aircraft builds on the established Sling 2 platform, leveraging the design freedoms offered by the new regulations.

The Sling 2M maintains the qualities that have made the Sling family popular globally: robust handling, excellent cross-country performance, and economical operating costs, while featuring a higher useful load and certification under the new ASTM consensus standards enabled by MOSAIC. Designed to attract both private owners and flight training organisations, the aircraft reflects the industry's move towards more capable yet affordable light aircraft.

MOSAIC presents a significant opportunity for Sling Aircraft to enhance its presence in the North American market. The company has established a strong reputation in both the experimental and factory-built aircraft sectors, with numerous Sling aircraft already operational across the United States. Certification under the new rules opens up additional market opportunities for flight schools seeking modern, cost-effective training aircraft with greater operational flexibility.

The Sling 2M also highlights South Africa's ongoing contribution to global general aviation innovation. Designed and manufactured in Johannesburg, Sling aircraft have gained international recognition through long-distance demonstration flights, including several around-the-world expeditions showcasing reliability and performance. Being among the first to introduce a MOSAIC-compliant aircraft further solidifies the company's position as a leading innovator in the light aircraft sector.

For South African aviation enthusiasts, the Sling 2M serves as a reminder that local engineering continues to compete successfully on the international stage, with home-grown aircraft shaping the future of recreational and flight training aviation alongside some of the industry's most established global manufacturers.

The EAA has been instrumental in developing MOSAIC over the past decade. The organisation viewed the initiative as a natural progression of the successful Sport Pilot and Light Sport Aircraft program introduced in 2004. The original framework significantly lowered barriers to aviation by simplifying pilot certification requirements and making aircraft ownership more affordable.

Existing Light Sport Aircraft remain unaffected, while manufacturers now have the flexibility to develop a wider range of aircraft under the expanded regulations. The guiding principle throughout the development process has been increasing access to aviation. MOSAIC will provide greater access to modern aircraft designs, updated training fleets, and more opportunities for pilots operating under Sport Pilot privileges.


If the South African Civil Aviation Authority eventually adopts elements of the MOSAIC philosophy, or aligns more closely with ASTM-based certification standards, it could provide opportunities for a broader range of modern training aircraft to enter the local market.

Lower certification costs, increased aircraft availability, and modern training platforms would all be welcome developments for South Africa's general aviation community, particularly as the industry seeks to attract new pilots and reduce flight training costs.


For an industry constantly seeking ways to reduce barriers to entry, the first MOSAIC aircraft delivery may well be remembered as the moment recreational aviation entered its next generation.
