Robinson Helicopter Company is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the inaugural flight of the R22 helicopter. The company began with the R22, a two-seat light utility helicopter that first flew in 1975 and obtained FAA certification in 1979.

The Robinson R22 is a fundamental component of helicopter flight training globally, with almost 5,000 units sold since 1973. Its straightforward mechanical design helps develop and enhance essential piloting skills, giving new pilots a deeper comprehension of helicopter manoeuvring. The R22's effectiveness in training is highlighted by the saying, "If you can fly an R22, you can fly anything," underscoring its significance in equipping pilots for any aircraft and mission.

Established in 1973 by Frank Robinson, Robinson Helicopter was founded with the mission to design and produce safe, reliable, and affordable helicopters. Before the introduction of the R22, helicopters were predominantly utilised by military forces, para-public organisations, and large corporations. The R22 transformed this landscape, creating new opportunities in areas such as flight training and agricultural applications. It revolutionised the personal helicopter market and set the stage for Robinson Helicopter’s comprehensive product line, which includes the R44, R66, and the innovative R88.

“The R22 was Frank Robinson's dream to make rotary-wing flight accessible for the average person,” said David Smith, president and CEO of Robinson Helicopter Company. “Fifty years ago, the R22 didn't just take its first flight; it created a legacy that has empowered generations of pilots and operators around the world, and we continue to honour its lasting impact and the role it plays in the global helicopter community.”
