Piaggio Aerospace has secured the first customer order for its newly launched P.180 Avanti NX, marking an important milestone for the Italian manufacturer as it works to rebuild momentum following several years of financial uncertainty and restructuring.

The announcement was made during AERO Friedrichshafen 2026, where Piaggio confirmed that a European operator had signed a contract for two Avanti NX aircraft. The aircraft will be delivered in an executive business configuration while also incorporating stretcher modules that will allow rapid conversion for air ambulance operations.

The order represents the first commercial success for the latest evolution of the iconic Avanti family and comes at a crucial time for the company. Piaggio Aerospace has faced significant financial challenges over the past decade, including entering extraordinary administration in 2018 amid mounting debts and declining production activity. The manufacturer spent several years searching for new investors and restructuring its operations before recently coming under the ownership of Turkish aerospace and defence company Baykar.

Company executives believe the new ownership structure is providing the stability needed to restore confidence in the Piaggio brand and revive production of the distinctive twin-turboprop aircraft.

“We are proud to sign a contract for the sale of the Avanti NX so soon after unveiling the aircraft,” said Giovanni Tomassini, CEO of Piaggio Aerospace. “Returning to AERO Friedrichshafen after a long absence and signing a contract for two aircraft demonstrates that, with the support of Baykar, we are making a strong comeback in the aviation market.”

The P.180 Avanti NX represents the latest generation of the Avanti platform, retaining the aircraft’s instantly recognisable three-surface aerodynamic configuration while incorporating extensive upgrades to avionics, onboard systems, cabin appointments, operational efficiency and reliability.

Originally designed to combine turboprop economy with near-jet performance, the Avanti series has long occupied a niche position within the business aviation sector. Its rear-mounted pusher propellers, swept wing and forward canard configuration contribute to both its distinctive appearance and high-speed performance characteristics.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the maiden flight of the original P.180 Avanti, underlining the longevity of a design that continues to attract operators seeking lower operating costs without sacrificing performance. Piaggio says the aircraft delivers jet-class cruise speeds while maintaining significantly lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions than many comparable business jets.

The company hopes the Avanti NX will help reignite demand for the platform as operators increasingly seek more environmentally efficient business aviation solutions. Piaggio Aerospace has indicated plans to gradually increase production output over the coming years, with ambitions to eventually build as many as 30 aircraft annually over the next decade should market demand continue to strengthen.

For the launch customer, the aircraft will add both executive transport capability and operational flexibility. In addition to corporate travel duties, the ability to rapidly reconfigure the aircraft for medical evacuation missions will allow the operator to expand into specialised air ambulance services.

The order is being viewed as an encouraging sign for Piaggio Aerospace as it attempts to restore its position within the international business aviation market after years of uncertainty. While significant challenges remain, the successful launch of the Avanti NX and renewed production activity suggest the historic Italian manufacturer may finally be entering a more stable chapter.
