In a historic milestone, the Royal Air Force's E-7 Wedgetail AEW Mk1 executed its inaugural flypast in conjunction with the renowned Red Arrows aerobatic display team at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in Fairford, Gloucester. Following the flypast, the Wedgetail conducted a 'touch and go' manoeuvre on the runway before returning to Birmingham Airport.

Red 1, Squadron Leader Jon Bond added, "Whether it’s the Red Arrows’ history-making, world-first use of sustainable fuels at this year’s RIAT or the introduction of E-7 Wedgetail, both showcase the RAF’s commitment to constant, cutting-edge innovation. I hope those watching the flypast were able to take plenty of photographs to mark this special mixed formation and true highlight of the 2025 Air Tattoo.”

The E-7 Wedgetail is currently the most advanced and operationally validated airborne early warning and control platform available. It is designed with a growth trajectory to effectively address anticipated threats over the next 20 years.

The mission crew will employ advanced workstations to deliver a comprehensive multi-domain battle management capability. This will provide situational awareness to the UK, NATO, and coalition force elements, direct offensive and defensive resources, and ensure continuous surveillance of a designated area. The Wedgetail notably enhances the lethality and survivability of allied aircraft and naval assets in hostile environments.

Stu Voboril, Vice President and E-7 Program Manager at Boeing, proudly stated, “Today’s flight is an amazing testament to the work of our integrated Boeing and UK supplier team, in partnership with the RAF. Our work reflects the pride we take in supporting the strategic alliance among the UK, US and allies, and the role the E-7 plays in strengthening global joint force mission advantage.”

The UK’s Wedgetail, a sophisticated airborne early warning and control aircraft, is set to serve under the esteemed No. 8 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. This strategic decision underscores the importance of enhanced surveillance and command capabilities in modern military operations. The Wedgetail will be stationed at RAF Lossiemouth, a key military airbase located in Scotland, which plays a critical role in the UK’s defence strategy, particularly in maritime operations and surveillance in the North Atlantic.

At RAF Lossiemouth, the Wedgetail will operate in close proximity to the fleet of nine P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. The P-8 Poseidon, designed for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, is a highly advanced aircraft that significantly enhances the UK's maritime capabilities. Both the Wedgetail and the P-8 Poseidon are based on the widely utilised Boeing 737 Next Generation airframe. This commonality in airframe design not only facilitates easier maintenance and logistical support but also allows for the sharing of technical expertise and resources between the two fleets.

The synergy between the Wedgetail and the P-8 Poseidon is particularly advantageous, as it enables the RAF to optimise its operational effectiveness. For instance, the Wedgetail’s advanced radar and sensor systems can provide critical situational awareness and command and control capabilities, while the P-8 Poseidon can execute targeted maritime missions with precision. This integrated approach to air and maritime operations enhances the UK's ability to respond to various threats, ensuring a robust defence posture in a rapidly evolving global security landscape.
