Elixir Aircraft and Turbotech Launch Industrial Program for Turbine-Powered Trainer

French aircraft manufacturer Elixir Aircraft and turbine engine developer Turbotech have taken a significant step toward the future of general aviation training by launching the Elixir Turbine Industrial Program. The announcement, made at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, follows a successful year of flight testing and formalises the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will guide the aircraft toward certification and commercial service by 2030.

The agreement marks the transition of the Elixir Turbine from an experimental demonstrator into a fully-fledged industrial development program. It covers aircraft integration, engineering development, and the certification process with both the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The project has progressed rapidly over the past 18 months. Following the first engine start in February 2025, the Elixir Turbine demonstrator completed its maiden flight over La Rochelle in June 2025 before embarking on an extensive flight test campaign. According to the two companies, the results of those tests have provided the confidence needed to proceed with industrialisation and certification.

The demonstrator combines Elixir Aircraft's innovative Carbon OneShot composite airframe with Turbotech's TP-R90 turbine engine, creating a platform intended to redefine the economics and operation of modern flight training aircraft.

Flight schools around the world continue to face rising fuel costs, increasing maintenance expenses, and a growing need to prepare pilots for increasingly sophisticated aircraft. Elixir Aircraft believes its turbine-powered trainer addresses each of these challenges.

Unlike traditional piston-powered trainers, the Elixir Turbine features a single-lever power control, similar to the engine management systems used in commercial turbine aircraft. This greatly simplifies engine operation, reducing pilot workload and allowing students to focus more on flying rather than engine management.

The TP-R90 turbine engine from Turbotech provides multiple operational benefits compared to traditional piston engines. Among the most significant is its multi-fuel capability, allowing operators to use various aviation fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This flexibility could become increasingly valuable as aviations forced transitions toward lower-carbon operations while maintaining global fuel availability.
While turbine engines have traditionally been associated with higher acquisition costs, they also offer important operational benefits. The TP-R90 has been designed with an exceptionally long Time Between Overhauls (TBO), reducing maintenance downtime and increasing aircraft availability. For flight schools, where aircraft utilisation is critical to profitability, higher dispatch reliability can translate directly into improved revenue generation.

Combined with Elixir Aircraft's lightweight Carbon OneShot composite structure, the turbine installation is expected to deliver competitive operating costs while maintaining the durability required for intensive training operations.
The Carbon OneShot manufacturing process, which produces much of the aircraft's structure as a single composite component, also reduces the number of parts, minimises assembly complexity, and contributes to lower long-term maintenance requirements.

Environmental considerations are becoming an increasingly important factor for flight training organisations, particularly in Europe where regulatory pressure continues to increase. The Elixir Turbine has been designed from the outset to operate on Sustainable Aviation Fuel, allowing operators to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions without requiring major infrastructure changes. While SAF availability remains limited in many regions, particularly in South Africa, the ability to operate on multiple fuel types gives operators flexibility as cleaner aviation fuels become more widely available over the coming decade.

An important aspect of the announcement is that the TP-R90 engine is no longer simply an experimental powerplant. According to Turbotech, the engine has already entered industrial-scale production and is commercially available in both Europe and the United States. This production maturity reduces technical risk as the partners move toward full aircraft certification.
Rather than developing both the aircraft and engine simultaneously, Elixir Aircraft is integrating an increasingly mature propulsion system into its already-certified airframe platform, potentially shortening development timelines.
