Cirrus Unveils TRAC10, a New Aircraft Designed Specifically for Professional Flight Training

Cirrus has introduced the TRAC10, a purpose-built training aircraft aimed at professional flight schools, universities and pilot training organisations. The new aircraft represents an expansion of the company's dedicated training portfolio and has been designed to address the evolving requirements of modern commercial pilot training.

Production of the TRAC10 will take place at Cirrus' headquarters in Duluth, Minnesota. The manufacturer expects to begin deliveries to customers in the United States during 2027, with international deliveries scheduled to follow in 2028. According to Cirrus, the company has already received orders for more than 100 aircraft from 13 professional flight schools around the world.

The launch comes at a time when the global aviation industry continues to face a significant pilot shortage. Airlines, training academies and universities are increasing investment in modern training fleets capable of delivering lower operating costs while exposing student pilots to increasingly sophisticated cockpit technology.

Unlike many aircraft that have been adapted from private ownership designs for training use, the TRAC10 has been developed specifically around the needs of professional flight instruction. Cirrus says the aircraft combines a three-seat configuration, advanced avionics, modern safety systems and digital fleet management capabilities into a single platform intended to improve training efficiency while reducing operational costs.


Zean Nielsen, Chief Executive Officer of Cirrus, described the aircraft as the company's response to the changing requirements of professional flight schools. "Drawing on more than thirty years of designing, building, and supporting aircraft worldwide, the TRAC10 is our most deliberate answer yet to what professional flight schools need to succeed."

Powering the TRAC10 is the 160-horsepower Rotax 916 iSc, a turbocharged engine equipped with Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC). The engine has been selected to offer reduced pilot workload while improving fuel efficiency and simplifying engine management. Cirrus states that the aircraft burns as little as 22.3 litres per hour at 65% cruise power, a figure that could significantly reduce fuel expenses for operators flying multiple training sorties every day.

The engine is also capable of operating on several fuel types, including traditional 100LL Avgas, 91/94 unleaded aviation fuel, and selected automotive gasoline (Mogas) blends where approved. This flexibility may prove attractive in regions where avgas availability or pricing remains a challenge. For flight schools operating large fleets, lower fuel consumption and simplified maintenance schedules can have a considerable impact on the overall cost of training.

One of the TRAC10's more distinctive features is its three-seat cabin layout. While most primary trainers accommodate only an instructor and student, the additional observer's seat allows another student or instructor to participate in training flights without occupying a control seat. This enables observational learning, allowing students to gain valuable experience before taking the controls themselves.

The rear seat is positioned higher than the front seats and between two large windows to provide improved visibility of both the outside environment and cockpit activities. An optional display can also be installed to allow the observer to follow flight information throughout the lesson. The cabin itself is described as one of the widest in its class, with adjustable seating and rudder pedals to accommodate pilots of different sizes.
