Vietnam Helicopter Corporation Doubles Down on Offshore Capability with Airbus H225 Order

Vietnam Helicopter Corporation (VNH) is reinforcing its position in Southeast Asia’s offshore aviation sector with an order for three Airbus H225 helicopters, a move that underlines both its confidence in the type and its intent to modernise for the next phase of offshore operations.

Announced in Hanoi on 7 April 2026, the new aircraft will be operated by VNH’s subsidiaries, Southern Vietnam Helicopter Company (VNH South) and Northern Vietnam Helicopter Company (VNH North). The helicopters will support the continued expansion of offshore energy missions while progressively replacing ageing aircraft already in service.
For VNH, the order is more than a straightforward fleet addition. It signals a clear long-term strategy: to build future heavy helicopter operations around a platform with a strong offshore pedigree and proven performance in demanding maritime environments.

That is significant in a region where offshore helicopter operators are increasingly expected to balance safety, range, payload and mission flexibility against rising operational demands. Aircraft serving offshore oil and gas platforms, utility missions and emergency support roles must be able to deliver dependable performance in often difficult weather and over-water conditions, where reliability is non-negotiable.

VNH Chief Executive Officer Kieu Dang Hung said the H225 had already established itself in the operator’s mission set and would play a central role going forward. “The H225 has proven itself time and again across our offshore missions, delivering the reliability, performance, and safety we expect,” Hung said. “As we look ahead, we see the H225 forming the backbone of our future fleet, allowing us to modernise our operations while expanding capacity and mission flexibility.”

That “backbone” description is telling. Rather than simply replacing older aircraft one-for-one, VNH appears to be moving towards a more focused and capable heavy helicopter fleet, one better aligned with the realities of modern offshore transport.
The order also extends a relationship between VNH and Airbus Helicopters that has now lasted for more than 40 years. Over that time, Airbus rotorcraft have been a familiar presence in Vietnamese offshore aviation, supporting a range of commercial and utility operations and helping connect onshore bases with energy infrastructure at sea.

Airbus Helicopters CEO Matthieu Louvot described the latest deal as a continuation of a long-standing partnership built on operational trust. “We are honoured to continue supporting VNH and its subsidiaries as they strengthen and revitalise their fleet,” Louvot said. “Their decision to centre future operations around the H225 underscores the aircraft’s exceptional reliability and performance in demanding offshore environments.” He added that Airbus looked forward to supporting the Vietnamese operator’s growth “for many decades to come”.

The three new helicopters will join VNH’s existing Airbus fleet, which already includes Super Puma variants and H155 helicopters. Together, these aircraft support a broad mission portfolio that includes offshore energy transport, utility flying, search and rescue, and wider transport operations.
That mission mix reflects the reality of helicopter operations in the offshore sector, where operators increasingly need aircraft that can transition between routine crew-change flights, logistical support work and urgent response tasks with minimal disruption. In that context, fleet commonality and proven capability are becoming increasingly valuable.

The H225 remains one of Airbus’ flagship heavy rotorcraft and the latest evolution of the well-established Super Puma family. It has built a strong reputation in offshore transport, search and rescue and other long-range missions, particularly where high payloads and difficult operating conditions are part of daily operations.
Its appeal lies in a combination of practical strengths: substantial range, strong lifting capability and systems designed to ease cockpit workload during demanding missions. Airbus points to the aircraft’s modern avionics suite and advanced autopilot systems as key features that enhance safety and improve situational awareness, particularly in offshore and low-visibility operations.
For operators like VNH, those attributes are more than brochure points. They translate directly into operational resilience, dispatch reliability and crew confidence, three factors that remain central to offshore aviation economics and safety performance.

The H225 also continues to hold a prominent place in the global helicopter market. More than 360 H225 and H225M helicopters are currently in service worldwide, collectively logging more than one million flight hours. Military operators include Brazil, France, Hungary, Indonesia, Iraq, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore and Thailand, further highlighting the type’s versatility across civil and defence roles.
For VNH, the latest order represents a measured but meaningful investment in future capability. At a time when offshore operators are under pressure to remain efficient, dependable and mission-ready, standardising around a proven heavy platform is a practical way to secure long-term operational strength.
In that sense, this is not just a fleet renewal story. It is a signal that Vietnam’s offshore helicopter sector is preparing for the future with aircraft designed to meet it head-on.
