When Richard van Grunsven started working on his first aircraft design, he came up with the phrase "Total Performance" to describe what he was aiming for. He wasn't trying to build the fastest plane, the one that could take off in the shortest distance, or the one that could win an unlimited aerobatics championship. Instead, he wanted to create a plane that did "really well" in a bunch of different areas, even if it wasn't the absolute best at any one thing. He nailed this goal, and maybe even went beyond it, with the RV-3, and later with the RV-4 and RV-6.

After decades of providing the RV-3, RV-4, and RV-6 to the builder community, Van's Aircraft is set to retire these iconic models from active kit production. This decision represents a significant milestone in the company's history and its devoted community of aviation enthusiasts and builders.

These aircraft symbolise the foundational years of Van's Aircraft and are more than just kits; they embody the spirit of innovation and craftsmanship that has characterised the company since its inception.

The RV-3, RV-4, and RV-6 are the foundation of Total Performance, a philosophy that emphasises the pursuit of excellence in design, performance, and builder satisfaction. Each model has played a crucial role in shaping the landscape of homebuilt aviation, attracting countless individuals to the joys of building and flying their own aircraft. Over the years, these models have garnered a loyal fan base, with builders appreciating the unique flying characteristics, ease of assembly, and the sheer satisfaction that comes from creating a personalised aircraft from the landing gear up.
However, as kit orders for these models have gradually declined, Van's Aircraft has made the strategic decision to focus on streamlining operations and shifting its attention toward bringing new designs into production. This shift not only reflects the changing dynamics of the aviation market but also the company's commitment to innovation and progress within the industry. The decision to retire these models is not taken lightly; it is a necessary step to ensure that Van's can continue to thrive and evolve in a competitive environment, ultimately allowing them to introduce fresh designs that will inspire the next generation of builders and pilots.

The last day to order kits for the RV-3, RV-4, and RV-6 is September 30th, 2025. This deadline is crucial for anyone who has been contemplating the purchase of these kits, as it marks the final opportunity to secure a piece of aviation history. After that date, we will no longer manufacture empennage, fuselage, wing, or finish kits for these aircraft, making this a significant turning point for both the company and its community of builders.
Despite the conclusion of active kit production for these models, we want to assure our customers and builders that support continues. We will continue offering replacement parts and technical assistance for the RV-3, RV-4, and RV-6, ensuring that existing builders and owners have access to the resources they need to maintain and enjoy their aircraft. This commitment to support reflects our dedication to the builder community and our recognition of the passion that goes into every RV project.
While this chapter is closing, the RV-3, RV-4, and RV-6 remain a lasting part of the Van’s story and a testament to the joy of building and flying an RV. These aircraft will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who have built them and flown them, serving as a reminder of the creativity, skill, and camaraderie that define the homebuilt aviation community. Looking to the future, owners and builders celebrate the legacy of these models while eagerly anticipating the new adventures and innovations that lie ahead from Van's Aircraft.
