One of the world's leading aircraft lessors has reinforced its confidence in the future of single-aisle aviation with a major commitment to Boeing. At the Farnborough International Airshow, SMBC Aviation Capital announced an order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, comprising 60 737-10s and 40 737-8s, marking one of the largest commercial announcements of the event.

The agreement is particularly significant as it represents SMBC Aviation Capital's first-ever order for the Boeing 737-10, the largest member of the 737 MAX family. It is also the largest single order for the 737-10 placed by an aircraft leasing company, highlighting growing industry confidence in the type as airlines seek greater capacity without sacrificing efficiency.

The latest purchase expands SMBC Aviation Capital's portfolio of owned, managed and committed Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to 450 jets, strengthening its position as one of the world's largest providers of next-generation narrowbody aircraft.

Global passenger traffic is expected to continue its long-term growth trajectory, with Boeing forecasting average annual growth of around 4% over the next two decades. That growth is driving airlines to modernise their fleets with aircraft capable of reducing fuel burn, lowering operating costs and cutting emissions.

For leasing companies such as SMBC Aviation Capital, maintaining a diverse portfolio of fuel-efficient aircraft is essential to meeting customer demand. Rather than airlines purchasing every aircraft outright, many prefer leasing arrangements that offer greater financial flexibility and allow fleets to be adjusted as market conditions evolve.

Peter Barrett, CEO of SMBC Aviation Capital, described the order as a significant milestone for the company. He noted that the agreement would provide airline customers with long-term access to the latest generation of aircraft while supporting their expansion plans well into the next decade. Barrett also highlighted the company's more than 20-year relationship with Boeing and said the order reflects increasing customer demand for larger-capacity narrowbody aircraft.

The Boeing 737-10 has become an increasingly attractive option for airlines operating high-demand domestic and regional routes. Seating up to 230 passengers and offering a range of approximately 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 km), the aircraft combines high passenger capacity with the operating economics of a single-aisle jet.

According to Boeing, the 737-10 delivers the best per-seat economics of any aircraft in its class, enabling airlines to transport more passengers while reducing fuel consumption and operating costs compared with older-generation aircraft. SMBC Aviation Capital, adding the larger variant to its portfolio, broadens the range of aircraft available to customers while opening opportunities with airlines looking to increase capacity without moving to larger twin-aisle aircraft.

The accompanying order for 40 Boeing 737-8s ensures continued demand for one of the industry's most versatile narrowbody aircraft, capable of serving everything from domestic sectors to medium-haul international routes.

Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Aeroplanes, welcomed the continued partnership with SMBC Aviation Capital. She said the order demonstrates the strong market demand for the efficiency, reliability and flexibility offered by the 737 MAX family and expressed appreciation for the lessor's continued confidence in Boeing.

The order also reflects the growing importance of leasing companies within the commercial aviation ecosystem. Industry data indicates that lessors have now ordered more than 1,450 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, accounting for around 20% of the programme's total backlog.

Aircraft leasing has become an increasingly important part of global aviation finance. Today, more than half of the world's commercial aircraft are operated under lease agreements, allowing airlines to expand or renew fleets while managing capital expenditure. SMBC Aviation Capital is among the industry's largest players, managing a fleet of approximately 1,700 aircraft serving more than 170 airlines worldwide. Supported by Japanese financial giants Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Sumitomo Corporation, the company has steadily expanded its portfolio of new-generation aircraft.

Approximately 80% of its owned fleet, measured by net book value, now consists of new-technology aircraft, reflecting the industry's shift towards more fuel-efficient designs.

For Boeing, the announcement provides another boost to its narrowbody programme at a time when demand for modern single-aisle aircraft continues to outpace production capacity across the industry. The order reinforces confidence in the long-term outlook for the 737 MAX family and demonstrates that major leasing companies remain willing to invest heavily in next-generation aircraft despite ongoing supply chain challenges affecting manufacturers worldwide.

As airlines continue replacing older fleets and expanding route networks, particularly in fast-growing markets across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, aircraft such as the 737-8 and 737-10 are expected to remain central to fleet planning.
