Sishen Airport Earns Gold Aviation Safety Award

Kumba Iron Ore's privately operated Sishen Airport has received the prestigious Gold Aviation Safety Award, recognising its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of operational safety. The award followed the airport's annual compliance audit conducted by aviation safety specialists Liston and Associates, which assessed the facility against the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The achievement is particularly noteworthy as the audit recorded no findings, highlighting the airport's strong safety culture, effective operational procedures and strict compliance with South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) regulations.

Liana Blaauw, Manager of Transportation and Facilities at Kumba Iron Ore, said the recognition reflects the dedication of the airport's personnel. "This recognition is a testament to the unwavering commitment our team has, which puts the safety of our people and partners above all else," she said. "As a facility open to public use, we are proud that no audit findings were noted by the advisors. This demonstrates the dedication the airport staff have towards the safety of passengers. Situated just outside Kathu in the Northern Cape, Sishen Airport plays a far greater role than many might expect from a privately operated airfield. While owned and managed by Kumba Iron Ore, the airport is licensed by the South African Civil Aviation Authority and is open for public use, serving both the mining industry and regional travellers.

The airport provides scheduled commercial flights linking Kathu with Johannesburg, offering a vital transport connection for business travellers, mining personnel, contractors, and residents of the Northern Cape. Given the vast distances involved in travelling by road, the air service significantly reduces travel time between one of South Africa's most important mining regions and the country's economic hub.
