Maeve Aerospace Grounded as Hybrid-Electric Ambitions End in Bankruptcy

The dream of a new generation of hybrid-electric regional airliners has suffered a significant setback following the bankruptcy of Dutch aviation start-up Maeve Aerospace. The company, which had spent the past five years developing a low-emissions regional aircraft known as the Maeve Jet, officially ceased operations after failing to secure the funding required to continue development.

A Dutch court declared Maeve Aerospace and its parent company, Green Transition Alliance, bankrupt on 28 May 2026, ending what had been one of Europe's most ambitious sustainable aviation projects.


Founded in 2021, Maeve operated from Delft in the Netherlands and maintained a second office at Oberpfaffenhofen Airport near Munich, Germany. Reports from Dutch financial media revealed that the company had been unable to raise the €20 million needed to fund the next phase of development. According to co-founder and CEO Jan Willem Heinen, potential investors ultimately viewed the project as carrying too much risk. At the time of its closure, Maeve employed 24 staff members and had established an impressive network of airline and industry partners.

Despite its financial struggles, Maeve had succeeded in attracting notable aviation partners. In September 2025, regional airline SkyWest signed a strategic agreement that included investment and exclusive launch customer rights. Shortly thereafter, Delta Air Lines announced its own partnership, positioning itself as Maeve's North American airline partner.

International interest extended beyond North America. At the 2025 Paris Air Show, Japan Airlines and JAL Engineering signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on aircraft design, operational planning and customer support development for the programme.

The company also forged relationships with major aerospace suppliers. Pratt & Whitney Canada partnered with Maeve on the development of propulsion technology, while MHI RJ Aviation Group (MHIRJ) provided engineering advisory support. The latter organisation, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, acquired the Bombardier CRJ programme and remains responsible for supporting the regional jet fleet worldwide.

The final version of the Maeve Jet represented the culmination of several design iterations as the company sought to balance sustainability, passenger capacity and commercial viability.


The aircraft was designed to accommodate between 76 and 100 passengers and promised fuel burn and emissions reductions of up to 40% compared with current-generation regional aircraft. Its distinctive configuration featured twin hybrid-electric open-rotor engines mounted at the rear of the fuselage. Depending on seating configuration, the aircraft was projected to offer a range of up to 1,450 nautical miles, placing it squarely within the regional airline market.

Maeve initially unveiled the all-electric 44-seat Maeve 01 in 2023, targeting a range of just 250 nautical miles. As battery technology limitations became increasingly apparent, the company abandoned the concept in favour of the larger hybrid-electric M80 later that year.

The M80 itself was subsequently redesigned, gaining additional passenger capacity and adopting a rear-engine configuration before being rebranded as the Maeve Jet. Each redesign pushed certification and entry-into-service targets further into the future, with the latest estimates suggesting operations could not begin before 2032.

While the immediate cause of Maeve's collapse was a €20 million funding gap, the broader financial challenge facing the programme was considerably larger. Heinen previously estimated that bringing the aircraft from concept to commercial production would require approximately €2 billion in total investment. Such figures highlight the immense capital requirements confronting clean-sheet aircraft developers, particularly those pursuing innovative propulsion technologies.

Maeve's experience reflects a wider trend within the sustainable aviation sector. Many companies that initially championed fully electric aircraft have shifted toward hybrid-electric solutions after recognising that current battery technology cannot deliver the range and payload capabilities demanded by commercial airlines. Several competitors remain active, including Heart Aerospace, which continues development of its hybrid-electric ES-30 regional aircraft. Meanwhile, fellow Dutch start-up Elysian is pursuing a 90-seat all-electric airliner concept, although significant technological and financial hurdles remain.

Although the company has disappeared, much of its engineering expertise appears set to continue influencing future aircraft programmes. Former Maeve Chief Technology Officer Martin Nüsseler recently joined MHI RJ Aviation Group as Vice President of Aircraft and New Program Development. Several other former Maeve engineers and programme leaders have also transitioned to MHIRJ, creating a substantial clean-sheet aircraft design capability within the organisation.

The move is particularly noteworthy given that MHIRJ has lacked its own aircraft development programme since the cancellation of the Mitsubishi SpaceJet. The company has since focused on engineering services and emerging aviation technologies, including hydrogen-electric propulsion studies. With Japan exploring the development of a next-generation commercial airliner targeted for service entry around 2035, the acquisition of Maeve's experienced design talent could prove strategically significant.

Maeve Aerospace's bankruptcy serves as a reminder that while the aviation industry's drive toward sustainability continues to accelerate, turning innovative concepts into certified commercial aircraft remains one of the most expensive and challenging undertakings in aerospace. The company leaves behind ambitious designs, valuable technological research and a team of engineers who may yet contribute to the next generation of regional aircraft. However, its collapse also underscores the harsh reality that securing long-term funding remains as critical to success as engineering innovation itself.

As airlines and regulators continue seeking pathways to lower emissions, the lessons learned from Maeve's rise and fall will likely influence future sustainable aviation programmes for years to come.
