Global 8000 Cleared for London City Airport

Bombardier’s flagship Global 8000 has secured approval to operate into London City Airport, adding one of Europe’s most challenging business aviation destinations to the aircraft’s growing list of capabilities and giving operators direct access to the heart of London.

Bombardier has announced that the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has approved its Global 8000 business jet for operations at London City Airport (LCY), with the designation taking effect immediately. For operators of the ultra-long-range aircraft, the approval represents more than just another destination on the route map. London City’s location, just a few miles from central London and the capital’s financial district, means Global 8000 passengers can arrive much closer to their final destination than they would at some of the larger airports serving the London region. Bombardier estimates that this could save passengers 60 to 90 minutes in ground-transfer time, depending on their final destination and traffic conditions.

London City Airport is a particularly demanding operating environment for larger business jets. Its relatively short runway and steep approach, required as part of the airport’s noise-abatement procedures, place additional demands on an aircraft’s approach, landing and braking performance. Access is therefore subject to specific aircraft and operational requirements, making approval an important demonstration of the Global 8000’s field-performance capabilities.

According to Bombardier, the Global 8000’s advanced wing incorporates leading-edge slats that contribute to its low-speed and short-field performance, while its braking systems provide the stopping capability required for demanding operating environments such as LCY.

The significance goes beyond the technical achievement. For business aviation operators, an aircraft’s usefulness is determined not only by how far or how fast it can fly, but also by the airports it can realistically serve. London City’s location makes it particularly valuable for passengers whose business takes them into central London, reducing the ground journey that can otherwise consume a significant portion of the time saved by flying privately.

The Global 8000 occupies the top end of Bombardier’s business jet portfolio and has been designed around an unusual combination of speed and range. The aircraft has a claimed maximum speed of Mach 0.95 and a range of 8,000 nautical miles, placing it among the most capable civil aircraft currently in production. Bombardier describes the Global 8000 as the fastest civil aircraft since Concorde, underlining the significance of its Mach 0.95 capability in the modern business aviation sector.

The aircraft’s range also means that London can be reached nonstop from major business centres on several continents. Bombardier specifically identifies destinations such as Singapore, Los Angeles, Honolulu and Buenos Aires as examples of cities that can be connected with London by the Global 8000. Actual operating range will naturally depend on factors including payload, weather, routing and required reserves, but the aircraft’s published range provides operators with an exceptionally large operating envelope.


Although the Global 8000’s headline figures naturally focus on its speed and range, Bombardier has also placed considerable emphasis on passenger comfort and the long-duration flying environment. The jet features a claimed 2,691-foot cabin altitude, which Bombardier describes as the lowest cabin altitude in production business aviation. The lower cabin altitude is intended to contribute to passenger comfort on long flights, complementing the aircraft’s spacious and highly appointed cabin.

The Global 8000 is designed around Bombardier’s emphasis on a smooth ride and premium cabin environment, allowing passengers to work, rest or conduct meetings during long-range flights. For an aircraft aimed at senior executives, corporate leaders and other high-value travellers, these characteristics are an important part of the overall proposition. The objective is not simply to transport passengers over long distances quickly, but to make the journey itself as productive and comfortable as possible.


Bombardier also says the Global 8000 can access up to 30% more airports than its nearest competitor, adding operational flexibility for owners and operators. In the case of London City, that flexibility takes on particular significance because of the airport’s location and the demanding performance requirements attached to operating there.

The London City approval comes less than a year after the Global 8000 entered service in December 2025, adding another significant milestone to the programme. Since entering the market, the aircraft has been positioned by Bombardier as the company’s ultimate expression of ultra-long-range business aviation, combining the range required for intercontinental travel with performance characteristics more commonly associated with smaller, shorter-range aircraft.


The CAA approval is both a technical achievement and a meaningful commercial advantage. London City is one of the world’s most strategically important airports for business travellers, and access to the airport allows the Global 8000 to deliver one of the central promises of business aviation: saving time from departure to final destination, rather than simply reducing time in the air.

With a Mach 0.95 top speed, 8,000-nautical-mile range and 2,691-foot cabin altitude, the Global 8000 already occupies an exceptional position in the business aviation market. The London City approval adds another dimension to its capability — demonstrating that for the newest generation of ultra-long-range business jets, performance is measured not only by how fast and how far they can fly, but by how effectively they can put passengers where they actually need to be.
