Dornier 228 NXT: A German Aviation Classic Gets a New Mission-Focused Future

General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS) has brought the iconic twin-turboprop back into production in Germany with the Do228 NXT, an extensively modernised evolution of an aircraft whose combination of STOL performance, ruggedness and versatility has made it a familiar sight in remote and demanding operations around the world.

The programme reached a major milestone on 2 May 2026, when the Do228 NXT demonstrator completed its first flight from Oberpfaffenhofen. The flight came almost 45 years after the original Dornier 228 first took to the air and marked the beginning of a new chapter for the German-built aircraft.

The NXT is not simply a production restart of an old design. GA-ATS has retained the fundamental characteristics that made the Dornier 228 successful while introducing new avionics, systems, equipment and cabin features. The aircraft retains its distinctive rectangular fuselage, retractable landing gear and high-wing configuration, while being powered by two Honeywell TPE331-10 turboprop engines. Four hardpoints beneath the wings provide additional flexibility for mission equipment.


The result is an aircraft designed to move seamlessly between roles. Passenger and cargo transport can sit alongside maritime patrol, border surveillance, search and rescue, reconnaissance, environmental monitoring and medical evacuation missions. That versatility is arguably the Do228 NXT's greatest selling point.

The Dornier 228's reputation was established by its ability to operate from short and unprepared airstrips, characteristics that remain particularly relevant in Africa and other regions where aviation infrastructure can be limited. GA-ATS says more than 255 Dornier 228 aircraft have been produced at Oberpfaffenhofen, with the worldwide fleet accumulating more than six million flight hours. The aircraft has operated with more than 30 operators across almost 20 African countries alone.


That existing African footprint gives the NXT an interesting advantage. Operators do not have to start with an entirely unfamiliar concept; they are being offered a modern aircraft built around a platform already proven in some of the world's most challenging operating environments.

The aircraft can be configured with different cabin arrangements incorporating passenger seats, stretchers, operator consoles and mission equipment. Its sensor architecture is also being expanded as the programme develops.


In August, GA-ATS announced a partnership with Swedish company TRAKKA Systems to integrate the TrakkaCam TC-375 multispectral camera. The gyro-stabilised system provides high-definition day-and-night imagery and is aimed at applications including law enforcement, search and rescue, civil protection, military intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and environmental monitoring.

That modular approach could make the Do228 NXT particularly attractive to government and security operators looking for one aircraft capable of performing several different missions.


GA-ATS has explicitly identified the continent as an important market and has chosen September 2026 for the aircraft's first major African appearances. The demonstrator appeared at the El Alamein International Airshow in Egypt from 8–10 September, before heading to South Africa for Africa Aerospace & Defence (AAD) 2026 from 16–20 September.

This is more than a promotional tour. The company points to the Dornier 228's long African operating history and sees the NXT as particularly suited to the continent's combination of remote communities, limited infrastructure, extensive coastlines and demanding surveillance and transport requirements.


The programme also represents something larger than another aircraft upgrade. General Atomics acquired the Oberpfaffenhofen site and Dornier 228 programme in 2021 and subsequently rebuilt the supply chain and established a new production capability. GA-ATS announced series production of the Do228 NXT in 2023, with plans for small-series production of up to five aircraft per year. The company is therefore reviving not only an aircraft but an element of Germany's aircraft manufacturing capability.

The first NXT demonstrator was formally unveiled at Oberpfaffenhofen in June 2026, before appearing at ILA Berlin and subsequently making its international debut at the Farnborough International Airshow in July.


Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the Do228 NXT is that GA-ATS has resisted the temptation to reinvent the aircraft completely. Instead, the company has concentrated on modernising the areas that matter most to today's operators: cockpit and cabin, avionics, sensors, air-data systems, attitude and heading reference systems, electrical air conditioning and mission equipment. That approach preserves the aircraft's fundamental strengths while addressing the realities of modern operations and that could prove to be the NXT's greatest asset.

The Do228 does not need to convince operators that it can operate from short runways, carry useful payloads or perform demanding missions. Those credentials were earned over decades. The challenge for GA-ATS is to demonstrate that the modernised NXT can deliver those capabilities with the reliability, supportability and technology expected of a new aircraft.


The Do228 NXT is an aircraft worth watching at AAD 2026. It occupies an increasingly interesting space between conventional regional aircraft and much larger special-mission platforms. For African operators, that combination of STOL capability, twin-engine reliability, flexible cabin configurations and sophisticated surveillance equipment could make the aircraft particularly relevant.

There is something rather fitting about the Dornier 228 returning to the continent in its newest form. After more than four decades of service, the aircraft that earned its reputation flying into places where larger aircraft simply cannot go is being given another opportunity to prove that sometimes the best way forward in aviation is to take a proven design — and make it better.
