AAD 2026: Paramount Unveils V-Raven - Reusable VTOL Eye in the African Sky

Paramount has unveiled its new V-Raven reusable vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft at AAD 2026, presenting a system designed to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), with a development pathway towards light attack.

Previously known as the N-Raven, the programme has evolved significantly. Paramount has moved away from the original catapult-launched concept to a returnable VTOL aircraft family that can operate from dispersed locations without a runway, catapult or dedicated launch infrastructure. In Africa, where a perfectly paved runway is often considerably easier to find on a PowerPoint presentation than in the field, that distinction matters.

The V-Raven is being developed around the requirements of operating over large, remote and infrastructure-poor areas. Paramount points to security challenges stretching from the Sahel to northern Mozambique, where persistent aerial surveillance can provide commanders with greater situational awareness without tying unmanned operations to conventional airbases.


“The V-Raven has been developed for the realities of the modern African battlefield,” said Sello Ntshiele of Paramount. “Vast operating areas, remote terrain, dispersed threats and the increasing use of drones mean that forces need to be able to see further and stay on station longer.”


One of the more significant aspects of the V-Raven concept is that it is designed to come home. Unlike expendable loitering munitions, the aircraft is intended to take off vertically, conduct its mission and return for recovery and reuse. That gives operators the ability to repeatedly deploy the same platform for surveillance missions, potentially offering different through-life economics from single-use systems.


The baseline ISR configuration incorporates an electro-optical sensor system for day-and-night surveillance. The aircraft can support automatic target tracking and is designed to accommodate different electro-optical and infrared sensor configurations depending on the mission.

Paramount is also developing a separate ISR/light-attack configuration, with the architecture intended to accommodate precision-guided glide munitions. That capability remains part of a phased development programme involving systems integration, ground testing and flight trials rather than a fully mature operational weapon system.

“What we are unveiling at AAD is the next stage of the V-Raven journey,” Ntshiele said. “It is a common aircraft architecture that can evolve as operational requirements develop.”


The petrol-powered V-Raven is claimed to offer up to eight hours of endurance, a range of up to 1,200 km and a cruise speed of approximately 140 km/h. The communications range between the aircraft and its ground station is specified at up to 150 km. Paramount is also developing an electric version, offering up to two hours of endurance and a range of approximately 250 km.


Both variants retain VTOL capability, allowing them to operate from dispersed locations without conventional runway infrastructure. The aircraft has a 3.6-metre wingspan, a 2.1-metre fuselage length and a maximum take-off weight of 65 kg.

The development of the V-Raven is noteworthy not just because another unmanned aircraft has been introduced at AAD. It represents a broader trend towards smaller, distributed and more autonomous aerial systems.


Having the capability to deploy an ISR asset from a remote location, maintain its flight for extended periods, and recover it without the need for a runway or catapult could be highly practical for African operators. It also reflects the changing nature of military aviation. Large, sophisticated aircraft remain central to high-end operations, but smaller unmanned systems are increasingly providing the persistent “eyes in the sky” that allow those larger assets and the forces on the ground to operate with better information.


The company describes V-Raven as a common aircraft architecture capable of supporting multiple mission configurations. The immediate emphasis is on ISR, while the longer-term development path includes light attack and other potential configurations.


The V-Raven is very much a programme moving through development rather than a finished combat system. But its first public appearance at AAD 2026 provides a clear indication of where Paramount sees part of the unmanned battlefield heading: persistent, recoverable, runway-independent and increasingly modular.


And unlike the traditional military solution of building a bigger aircraft, a bigger airbase and a bigger budget to support it, the V-Raven is betting that sometimes the smarter answer is simply to send a relatively small aircraft where the problem is.
