Saab has officially rolled out the first Gripen F two-seat fighter aircraft destined for the Brazilian Air Force, marking a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between Sweden and Brazil. The aircraft was presented during a ceremony held on 2 June at Saab's production facilities in Linköping, Sweden.

The Gripen F is the two-seat variant of the latest-generation Gripen E fighter and has been specifically developed to meet the evolving training and operational requirements of modern air forces. By combining advanced pilot conversion training with full combat capability in a single platform, the aircraft offers a versatile solution for both peacetime and operational missions.

Brazil, as the launch customer for the Gripen E/F programme, played a central role in the development of the two-seat variant. The collaboration extends well beyond aircraft procurement, with Brazilian industry participating directly in the design and development process. Through Saab's extensive technology transfer programme, hundreds of Brazilian engineers, technicians and aviation specialists have received advanced training, strengthening the country's aerospace sector and expanding its indigenous defence capabilities.

Speaking at the rollout ceremony, Lars Tossman, Head of Saab's Aeronautics business area, highlighted the significance of the achievement. "The rollout of Gripen F represents a shared achievement between Saab, Brazilian industry and the Brazilian Air Force, reflecting the deep trust we have built together over many years. Developing this aircraft together demonstrates the maturity of this collaboration."

The Gripen F retains the advanced capabilities of the single-seat Gripen E, including its sophisticated sensor suite, electronic warfare systems and open-architecture design. The addition of a fully independent second cockpit allows instructors to conduct realistic mission training while maintaining full operational functionality. This capability enables pilots to transition to frontline fighter operations more rapidly than with traditional training methods.

Beyond its training role, the second crew member can assist with mission management, sensor operation and tactical decision-making during complex combat scenarios. This shared workload enhances situational awareness and operational effectiveness, particularly in high-threat environments.

Before delivery to the Brazilian Air Force, the aircraft will move to Saab's Flight Test Centre in Sweden, where it will undergo a dedicated flight test programme to validate its performance and mission systems.

The Gripen programme remains a cornerstone of Brazil's air power modernisation efforts. Under the contract signed with the Brazilian government in 2014, Saab is developing and producing 36 aircraft for the Brazilian Air Force, comprising 28 Gripen E single-seat fighters and eight Gripen F two-seat aircraft. Deliveries began in 2020, with 11 aircraft delivered to date.

The Gripen F's debut also underscores growing international interest in the platform. Saab has already secured additional orders for the two-seat variant from the air forces of Thailand and Colombia, further strengthening the Gripen family's position in the global fighter aircraft market. As the aircraft progresses toward flight testing and eventual operational service, the Gripen F represents not only a new capability for Brazil but also a successful example of international aerospace collaboration delivering advanced combat aircraft for the next generation of air warfare.
