Kenya Airways CEO Mr Allan Kilavuka has been appointed the new Africa’s Airline Association (AFRAA) Chairperson. Mr. Kilavuka assumed the role of Chairperson of the African Airlines Association at the 56th Annual General Assembly and Summit in Cairo, Egypt, marking a significant milestone for both Kenya Airways and Africa's aviation industry. This appointment is a significant development that will shape the future of Africa’s aviation industry.
Mr. Kilavuka will head the association for an initial one-year period, which may be extended. His duties will include steering AFRAA's strategic course, championing the concerns of its member airlines, and supporting initiatives that foster the development, longevity, and international competitiveness of Africa's aviation sector.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Kilavuka expressed his profound gratitude, saying, “It is a privilege to be entrusted with the role of AFRAA Chairperson. I am deeply appreciative of this opportunity and look forward to working alongside industry peers to amplify Africa’s voice in global aviation, build on greater collaboration, and drive strategic initiatives to enable Africa’s airlines to navigate current challenges and seize new opportunities. Together, we can advance Africa’s aviation industry to benefit all stakeholders and the communities we serve.”
Mr. Kilavuka takes over from João Carlos Pó Jorge, the departing Chairperson and CEO of LAM Mozambique, who has been in charge of AFRAA for the last two years. During Mr. Jorge’s leadership, AFRAA has significantly advanced in tackling the obstacles presented by the post-pandemic recovery phase, advocating for strategic partnerships, and promoting sustainability initiatives. Mr. Kilavuka, known for his effective leadership abilities, is anticipated to further develop the advancements made under Mr. Jorge's administration, guaranteeing a seamless handover and a bright future for AFRAA.
Established in 1968, the association is made up of more than 40 airlines, with prominent carriers from various parts of the continent, accounting for over 85% of African air transport. AFRAA is dedicated to fostering industry collaboration, supporting the expansion of African airlines, and promoting the sustainable advancement of the air transport sector in the continent. Through its advocacy, research, and member services, AFRAA plays an active role in driving initiatives that enhance safety, efficiency, and competitiveness in the aviation sector in Africa.
At the General Assembly in Cairo, Egypt, Kenya Airways received The Airline of the Year Award for Best Improved Profitability. This esteemed accolade acknowledged the airline's exceptional achievements in 2023, highlighting Kenya Airways' dedication to operational excellence, increased profitability, and significant contribution to shaping Africa's aviation industry.
