Ethiopian Airlines has marked its 80th anniversary, commemorating eight decades of continuous operations and growth into one of Africa’s largest and most influential aviation groups.

The milestone was formally announced at a press conference in Addis Ababa, where Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew outlined the significance of the anniversary and the airline’s plans to celebrate the occasion throughout the year. The launch event, held at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, represents the first in a series of activities planned to reflect on the carrier’s history and future trajectory.

Ethiopian Airlines began operations in April 1946 with a modest fleet of five Douglas C-47 aircraft, initially serving a scheduled route between Addis Ababa and Cairo via Asmara. From these early beginnings, the airline steadily expanded its network and modernised its fleet, introducing aircraft such as the Convair 240 and Douglas DC-6B during its formative years.

Over time, the airline has built a reputation as an early adopter of new aviation technologies within Africa. Its fleet development strategy has seen it operate successive generations of aircraft, positioning the carrier as a key player in advancing modern aviation standards on the continent. Today, Ethiopian Airlines operates a mixed fleet that includes Boeing 737, 777 and 787 aircraft, alongside Airbus A350-900 and A350-1000 models, as well as De Havilland Q400 turboprops.

Speaking at the anniversary announcement, Tasew described the milestone as significant not only for the airline but also for the broader African aviation sector. He emphasised the carrier’s longstanding role in connecting African countries with each other and with global markets, while maintaining a Pan-African identity.

Over the past eight decades, Ethiopian Airlines has expanded into a comprehensive aviation group with operations spanning passenger services, cargo, maintenance, training, and ground handling. The airline currently serves more than 160 domestic and international destinations across five continents, reinforcing its position as a major hub carrier linking Africa to the rest of the world.

Industry metrics consistently place Ethiopian Airlines among the leading carriers on the continent in terms of fleet size, passenger numbers, destinations served, and overall revenue. Its Addis Ababa hub has developed into one of Africa’s primary aviation gateways, supported by ongoing investment in infrastructure and operational capability.

In addition to organic growth, the airline has pursued a multi-hub strategy aimed at strengthening regional connectivity. This approach includes partnerships and joint ventures with other African carriers, contributing to the development of aviation capacity across the continent. These initiatives include hubs in West, Central and Southern Africa, reflecting a broader strategy to decentralise operations and improve intra-African connectivity.

Ethiopian Airlines is also a member of the Star Alliance, which has enabled it to extend its global reach through codeshare agreements and coordinated network planning with partner airlines. The carrier has received multiple industry awards over the years, including repeated recognition as Africa’s leading airline by international rating organisations.

Looking ahead, the airline continues to pursue its long-term growth strategy under the “Vision 2035” framework. This plan outlines ambitions to position Ethiopian Airlines among the world’s top 20 aviation groups, with continued investment in fleet expansion, digitalisation, and sustainability initiatives.

As Ethiopian Airlines enters its ninth decade of operations, the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on a trajectory that mirrors the broader evolution of African aviation. From its origins as a small regional operator to its current status as a global network carrier, the airline’s development highlights both the opportunities and challenges associated with building a competitive aviation sector on the continent.

Further events and announcements are expected throughout the year as part of the anniversary programme, offering additional insight into the airline’s history and its strategic priorities for the future.
