South African regional carrier CemAir has strengthened its international reach through a new unilateral interline agreement with Spanish airline Air Europa, providing travellers with easier access between Southern Africa, Europe and the Americas.

The agreement, which came into effect on 23 June 2026, enables passengers travelling on Air Europa to seamlessly connect to CemAir's domestic and regional network in South Africa via a single itinerary. The arrangement also includes baggage through-checking, simplifying the travel experience for passengers connecting between the two airlines.

The partnership represents another step in CemAir's strategy to expand its network through cooperation with international airlines, improving access to destinations across Southern Africa while strengthening links with overseas markets.

Air Europa passengers arriving in Johannesburg will have access to CemAir's network, covering destinations across South Africa and nearby countries, including routes beyond the main metropolitan areas. Conversely, CemAir passengers will gain enhanced access to Air Europa's vast international routes through its Madrid hub, offering seamless connections to locations across Europe and the Americas.

Shaniel Singh, Chief Commercial Officer at CemAir, said the partnership reinforces the airline's commitment to offering customers greater travel flexibility and enhanced international connectivity. "We are delighted to welcome Air Europa as our newest interline partner. This agreement further strengthens CemAir's international connectivity and creates additional travel opportunities for our customers. By combining Air Europa's global reach with CemAir's extensive Southern African network, we can offer travellers a more seamless and convenient journey while supporting tourism and business travel throughout the region."

Air Europa also highlighted the strategic value of the agreement, particularly for passengers travelling beyond Johannesburg into Southern Africa. Estelle Leray, Alliances & Customer Experience Director at Air Europa, said the partnership would enhance the airline's presence in the South African market while offering customers access to a broader range of destinations. "We are very pleased to move forward with this agreement with CemAir, which will allow our passengers to travel beyond Johannesburg and access new destinations across Southern Africa seamlessly and efficiently. This partnership not only enhances connectivity and the overall travel experience but also strengthens Air Europa's presence in Johannesburg alongside a solid and well-established partner in the region."

The agreement builds on CemAir's growing portfolio of international airline partnerships. As an International Air Transport Association (IATA) member, the privately owned South African carrier already maintains several interline and codeshare agreements with international and regional airlines, allowing passengers to travel more easily between Southern Africa and destinations around the world.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, CemAir operates scheduled domestic and regional services from its primary bases in Johannesburg and Cape Town, serving 14 destinations across Southern Africa. The airline has steadily positioned itself as an important regional connector, linking major cities with smaller business and leisure destinations that are often underserved by larger carriers.

The agreement complements Air Europa's expanding long-haul network. Founded in 1986 and a member of the SkyTeam alliance, the Spanish carrier operates one of Europe's younger fleets, comprising Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Boeing 737 aircraft, with Airbus A350-900s expected to join the fleet in the near future. From its hub at Madrid-Barajas Airport, Air Europa serves more than 55 destinations across Europe, North America, South America and the Caribbean.

The new interline arrangement is expected to benefit both leisure and business travellers by reducing the complexity of multi-airline journeys and improving access to regional destinations that previously required separate bookings. Bookings under the new interline agreement became available from 23 June 2026, marking another milestone in CemAir's efforts to strengthen Southern Africa's connectivity with global aviation networks.
