The Portuguese Air Force has taken a significant step in modernising its pilot training pipeline with the selection of the Tecnam P-Mentor as the cornerstone of its new Elementary Flight Training (EFT) capability. The programme, awarded by the Portuguese Ministry of National Defence, will see seven aircraft delivered alongside a comprehensive training and support package.

The contract has been awarded through Spanish aviation services provider World Aviation S.L. in partnership with Italian manufacturer Tecnam, marking a notable example of European collaboration in the defence aviation training sector.

Beyond the delivery of seven P-Mentor aircraft, the programme includes a full-spectrum training solution designed to enhance operational readiness from the outset. This encompasses synthetic training systems, instructor training, and a five-year integrated logistics support (ILS) package. The inclusion of both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance within the ILS framework is intended to ensure high fleet availability while reducing lifecycle costs. Such turnkey training solutions are increasingly favoured by air forces seeking to streamline procurement and focus on operational output rather than support infrastructure.

The Tecnam P-Mentor has been developed specifically for the ab initio and elementary military training market. Equipped with a modern glass cockpit based on the Garmin G3X avionics suite, the aircraft provides a training environment aligned with contemporary frontline systems while maintaining cost-efficiency.

Its side-by-side seating configuration, visibility, and handling characteristics are optimised for early-stage pilot development, bridging the gap between basic flight screening and more advanced training platforms. The aircraft’s relatively low operating costs also make it attractive for sustained, high-tempo training operations.

World Aviation brings established operational experience to the programme. The company already operates a fleet of Tecnam aircraft within its Approved Training Organisation (ATO), including the P2008JC, and has accumulated substantial training and maintenance experience.

With more than 2,000 students trained and over 20,000 flight hours logged, the organisation has demonstrated its capability to manage large-scale training operations. Its certifications, including ATO, Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation (CAMO), position it to deliver both training and technical support to military customers. In addition to pilot training, World Aviation is also involved in specialised operations such as fixed-wing maritime search and rescue, further underlining its operational versatility.

The selection of the P-Mentor by the Portuguese Air Force reflects a broader trend among European air arms to modernise entry-level training using cost-effective, digitally equipped platforms. By integrating aircraft, simulation and support services into a single contract, air forces can accelerate capability development while maintaining budget discipline.

For Tecnam, the contract represents another milestone in expanding the P-Mentor’s footprint within the military training market. For World Aviation, it reinforces its role as a capable intermediary between manufacturers and institutional clients.

As European defence organisations continue to adapt to evolving operational requirements, partnerships such as this highlight the growing importance of integrated training ecosystems, where aircraft, technology and support services combine to deliver efficient and scalable pilot training solutions.
